Aims -

To assist those who practice couples counselling in reflexive thought when they consider what might be a helpful therapeutic intervention for a couple.

Content -

Discussion and consideration of psychodynamic and systemic interventions, their intention, their use, and their appropriateness when consideration a situation with a couple in counselling.
What is the intervention meant to achieve?
What do I want the couple to notice that might help them?
How do I judge if what I want them to notice is what they might need to help them?
Circular questions: having delivered one, how do I use the new information gained to help me create the next one?
Which interventions are better than others toward a particular purpose?
Nothing I’ve said appears to have helped – what now?

Note – whilst this workshop is intended for qualified couples counsellors, counsellors who are familiar with psychodynamic and systemic therapy and who are considering training as a couples counsellor may find this workshop of interest.

Originally trained by Relate, for whom she still works, Sue has been in couples practice as a therapist, supervisor and trainer, for 25 years.
